Ensuring Spice Quality and Compliance: A Growing Concern for UK Consumers and Retailers – Webinar – March 18th 2025 11;00 to 13:00 Hrs BST

organised by Tiziana Sgamma from De Montfort University in collaboration with Indo British Trade Council (IBTC).

This event brought together key stakeholders to discuss the future of spice imports, compliance strategies, and what all of this means for businesses and consumers alike. A greater alignment is required between the India-UK spice trading process.

The session featured Milan S. (Virani Food Products Limited), David Lowe (Food Standards Agency) and Tiziana Sgamma (De Montfort University). 🇬🇧🇮🇳 Professor Samir Dani (Keele Business School, Keele University) moderated the session and conducted the panel Q&A discussion. The webinar was supported by the Consulate General of India Birmingham, @Spice Board of India, Food Standards Agency UK, and Trading Standards UK.

The discussions focussed on the necessary precautions and protocols to be followed from production to export, ensuring that Indian spices meet the UK’s stringent food safety requirements. Milan Shah presented the supply chain risks within the India- UK spice trade and discussed the strengths of the testing process within India for exports. He presented case studies and discussed the differences between regulatory and contractual requirements. David Lowe discussed the UK imports regulatory process, risk assessment, the national monitoring plan, and challenges with allergens. Dr. Sgamma discussed the quality standards and the testing process. She presented the DNA barcoding process for authenticating the consignment for quality and allergens.

In response to the webinar, the Indo British Trade Council is proposing a conference between Indian and the UK regulators, and industry stakeholders to facilitate a collaborative effort to enhance spice quality and ensure regulatory compliance. This will be followed by regulatory delegations between the two countries. A digital hub regarding regulations and testing procedures has also been proposed as a takeaway from the webinar.  These measures aim to minimize rejections and losses while maximizing benefits for Indian spice exporters and UK importers.
